Coalfields Steam is an annual event held by the Richmond Vale Railway Museum to celebrate over 150 years of continuous steam on the Richmond Vale railway. The celebration will begin on Sunday 10th and conclude on Monday 11th June.
Marjorie, a 0-4-0 saddle tank steam engine, will be running along the Mulbring Road branch line with a demonstration consist of restored non-air coal wagons that were used widely on the Richmond Vale Railway and will also run passenger trains to Pelaw Main along the restored passenger line.
Thomas the Tank Engine and possibly a friend will be visiting as well, providing regular miniature train rides [for a small additional fee per ride].
The mining museum will be open with its extensive collection of mining equipment, the majority of which are artifacts from the local area. The entry building will house a photographic display from Hunter Heritage and miniature steam machinery and live steam engines will also be found there. Guided tours around the Former Richmond Main Colliery may be available depending on staff levels available on the day.
The Hunter Valley Vintage Farm Machinery Club will also have a fascinating collection of vintage tractors and steam driven machinery in various locations around the site that provide an insight into the technologies of yesteryear, many driven by the coal mined in the local area in days gone by.
Fire and Steel Viking Age Society will be in the grounds demonstrating how people lived and fought in the Dark Ages. Feel the weight of chainmail armour and hold a sword or shield. There will also be displays of archery and combat techniques.
